Marilyn is a Jungian-oriented spiritual counselor with a keen interest in ritual, depth-psychology, Alchemy, and the healing process that comes through making ritual art. Most recently, after many years of personal study of and several years of pilgrimage to Black Madonna sites, she is now teaching on-line courses in that area of study and leads small groups of women in pilgrimage to France to see the Black Madonnas. A life-long dream tracker and leader of dream groups, Marilyn has trained with Jungian Analyst and depth-psychologist Robbie Bosnak, in Embodied Imagination, a way of working with dreams and waking memories that is body-based and wellness-oriented. Through her studies of ritual and ceremony with Native European and Native American teachers, she discovered that she had a natural aptitude for walking and guiding others “between the worlds.” These studies also engendered in her a love of earth-based spirituality, an appreciation of the Wheel of the Year, the healing aspect of nature, animals, the elements and the seasonal round. As a ceremonialist she facilitates group and private ritual, and as an ordained minister, she facilitates weddings, rites of passage, and memorial services. Marilyn has had an eclectic “career,” working in many arenas. She followed her love of keeping physically fit into being an instructor of step-aerobics, yoga and pilates mat classes at local Whidbey Island health clubs. She also served as Spa Director of The Spa at The Inn at Langley, where she created and facilitated Personal Wellness Retreats. Mojud starts out as an inspector of weights and measures but then receives several visits from the spirit guide Khidr. Each time his life settles, the spirit appears with a new adventure. Everyone thinks Mojud is mad, but with a sacred simple-mindedness he empties his will and follows directions. Finally, the story says, "Clerics, philosophers and others visited him and asked, 'Under whom did you study?' 'It is difficult to say,' said Mojud." I think Khidr must have visited Jerry Wennstrom a few times, too. His many beautifully told stories show that Jerry has Mojud's open-hearted faith, the intelligent willingness to read the signs life offers of what to do next and where to turn. As Jerry himself realizes, it is the way of the Holy Fool, the one who grasps the simple idea that being open to life is ultimately more rewarding that trying to control it. Joseph Campbell once wrote that Aphrodite can be seen today standing on the corner of 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. The timeless spirits and the timeless truths are ever-present, if disguised in ordinary clothes and personalities. Jerry's insights show all the traces of the world's ancient wisdom, though he uses his own hand-crafted images and phrases. This is another example of what happens when you open yourself to people and events without self-protective judgments. Reading Jerry's own tale within his many vivid stories, I am also visited by Perceval, who found his way through the forests and the wasteland with a simplicity of mind and an egolessness that was magical. As I was reading how Jerry consistently appreciates the holiness in his many troubled acquaintances, I also thought of R. D. Laing, that brave soul who was ridiculed for his own wayward life. Jerry's attitude echoes Laing's insight that psychological problems are actually spiritual in nature and deserve to be treated as such. I don't share Jerry's enthusiasm for "wholeness," but I like his description of it as coming full circle. My favorite image for this is the ancient ouroboros, the snake that bites its tail. We humans are not evolving but circling, and that the stuff of our souls keeps coming back for more attention and more living. I appreciate the form of Jerry's book, a series of stories that circle around. I like the fact that they aren't entirely chronological and that each one is a beginning. I imagine Alexander Calder mobiles spinning all around me as I read, and I trust that view of life, one that gets nowhere, no, not even spiraling toward a better end. While Jerry's stories will remain with me for a long time as lessons in being open to life's paradoxes, I am also taking note of powerful phrases that conjure up ancient wisdom: "Seasoning sanctifies. Insanity, that too is God. The power of the bloodline. Our dualistic package. Form is death. I have to leave this perfection. We do not make good gods. The whispering God. Enlightenment is surrender." I'm sure that many people will find comfort and inspiration in this book. Jerry is able to describe a spiritual journey outside of any ancient tradition or modern system, and I trust that originality. He avoids the many hollow words sometimes enter contemporary spiritual thought and embodies the idea that you can be fully spiritual and fully secular at the same time. Jerry's experience shows that simply by being receptive to deep intuition and living intelligently from the heart, you can achieve a degree of holiness. In the old Sufi story people were amazed that Mojud, an untutored wanderer, developed the power to heal. I expect Jerry's book to be a source of healing, and so I can ask him the question put to Mojud: "Under whom did you study?" I am not an artist nor a student of art. I have earned my bread as a professor of religious studies. My tools have been words, reason, order, and precise statement. Jerry’s art brushes aside my words, shatters reason, laughs at order, and hangs my precise statements as decorations on the arms of his magnificent creations. His work turns my world upside down and inside out. That’s why I love it so. When I stand in front of Jerry’s pieces, when I turn their wheels and open their doors, I am mesmerized by their absolute originality. Everywhere my mind goes, it is turned around. Muses in glasses, goddesses in gas masks, madonnas in drag. Faces open, skulls pop out, outrageous hair cascades to the floor in screaming colors. Nothing makes sense but everything coheres until, exhausted, I give up and simply play, and when I play, something sneaks up on me and changes me. I am freer, looser, walking in wonder again. I am staggered by Jerry’s craftsmanship, by his technical mastery of so many mediums – wood carving, metal work, painting. How many lifetimes has his soul spent collecting these extraordinary skills? But in the end, it is his unbounded creativity that moves me most deeply. His ability to weave people’s discarded junk into combinations that transfix me with their beauty. How in the world did he come up with that combination? Where did this idea come from? Layer upon layer of the unexpected, it never stops. Every square inch overflows with novelty. When I step away from Jerry’s work and come back to my own world, I always want to go out and make something, anything. I want to try something new, be bolder, take risks. His freedom makes me feel the straightjacket of my habits. I would say that Jerry’s creativity is contagious, but really it is his communion with the universe from which his creativity comes that calls to me, inviting me to drink deeper from this bountiful well. Jerry came by his remarkable capacity to open to the deep psyche through honest if unusual means. In response to a growing spiritual unrest when he was 29 – and in the middle of his Saturn Return astrologers would point out – he burned all his artwork, gave away his possessions and money, and committed himself to living a life of unconditional trust in the universe. Like the sannyasins of ancient India, he stripped his life to its bare essentials and lived on the blessings of circumstance in order to discover the “rock-bottom truth of his life.” Fifteen years later, he was a changed man, living deeply in the present and strikingly transparent to the cosmic intelligence that pulses through all things. In Jerry’s work, life and death play tag as the lovers they are. This is a truth I have learned in my own spiritual journey. Many years ago, I began a series of clinically structured LSD sessions following Stanislav Grof’s protocols. The resulting 20-year odyssey drew me ever deeper into the heart of the universe and the mind of God. Death became my dearest companion, opening the door to untold adventures. Sweet death, sacred death, guardian of truth, gateway to ecstasy. Life without death would be such barren sadness. Not death at the end, but death here and now, this very moment. Seen in this light, Jerry’s outrageous women are dakinis, Tibetan “sky-dancers,” liberating us by tearing apart our assumptions, breaking through our fixations, bringing us back to the wonder of children seeing the world for the first time. Play with me, they say. Twist my keys, turn my gears, run your fingers through my hair, be surprised, be confused, but play with me. Embrace my strangeness until you rest in my arms restored, reborn into the mystery. Mystery within mystery, the joy of surrendering to the delicious openness from which all new things come. The Sacred Communion. The peace and compassion on the faces inside Jerry’s coffins call to me from some deep remembering, reassuring me. Strange and ordinary, all is well. Death and birth, all is well. Fierce and tender, all is well. But just when I have absorbed this comfort, his next figure slaps me again, reminding me that the universe is not tame but wild, and closure is an illusion. The dakinis beat the drum, wear necklaces made of human skulls, and dance on cadavers. Wild wisdom shakes us to our bones. Becoming one with life is not for the faint of heart. Opening to the One Mind that shines in all, the One Heart that beats in all takes complete surrender, again and again, minute by minute, no rest, no exceptions. One story I was told, growing up— as a challenge, a European machine shop sent my great grandfather a sewing needle that had been drilled through, length-wise. No small feat! My grandfather threaded the hole, made a tiny bolt to fit, screwed it into the hole and sent it back. He was also commissioned by the British royal family to drill a hole through a rare, pear-shaped diamond; he made a precision machine that dipped the drill in oil, then diamond dust and barely touched the stone. It ran for weeks successfully drilling the stone. It is flipped on its side so the keyboard runs vertically. The entire piece stands 8 feet tall and has a 5-foot carved cedar figure inside. The original pedal mechanism from the piano has been mounted at the bottom. Pressing one of the two foot pedals turns the figure’s head. On the back of the head is a small, round door. The estate was created and owned by Marie-Aimee Laborde, a psychotherapist who had moved there from her native France 30 years earlier and was a participant in the program.
